I’m truly grateful and happy to share that my subsequent entrant 500 visa has been granted today! My case was quite challenging — I had a very short marriage duration (only 3 months), and I had not even completed showing my graduation at the time of application. Because of these reasons, many agencies were not willing to take my case. But cia lawyers believed in my case and handled everything with great professionalism, honesty, and care. Their guidance, proper documentation, and constant support made this success possible. I highly recommend their service to anyone with a complex or genuine case. If your case is strong and truthful, the right legal support can truly make a difference. Thank you again for your dedication and hard work! I am greatful.

I’m incredibly grateful to CIA Lawyers for helping me secure my Australian visa, especially at a time when the approval rate was extremely low. Even when the chances seemed slim, they stayed confident, guided me honestly, and handled my application with absolute precision. Their experience, attention to detail, and clear communication truly made the difference. I wouldn’t have gotten this result without them. Highly recommended.

Australian Citizenship Services We Provide in Sydney

Citizenship by Conferral

Citizenship by conferral is the most common pathway. It is for permanent residents who have lived in Australia for the required period and want to become full Australian citizens.

To be eligible, you generally need to have:

Lived in Australia lawfully for the four years immediately before you apply

Held permanent residency for at least 12 months within that four-year period

Been outside Australia for no more than 12 months total in the last four years, and no more than 90 days in the 12 months immediately before you apply

Passed the Australian Citizenship Test if you are aged 18 to 59

Met the good character requirement

Processing times for citizenship by conferral currently range from 12 to 15 months for most applicants, though complex cases can take longer.

We review your travel history and residency record before you apply. Many people make mistakes on their absence calculations, which can trigger a manual review and add months to your processing time.

Complex Citizenship Applications

Not all citizenship applications are simple. We regularly handle cases that involve:

Criminal history or character concerns. The Department of Home Affairs applies the good character test to all applicants aged 18 and over. Even minor traffic offences and old convictions must be disclosed. We advise you on how your history may be assessed and prepare submissions where needed.

Inconsistent travel or residency records. If your travel history or address records do not match your previous visa applications, it can trigger a manual integrity review that delays your ceremony by 12 months or more. We audit your records before you apply so this does not happen.

Identity document issues. Missing birth certificates, name changes, documents in foreign languages, or records from countries with unreliable civil registration systems all need careful handling. We advise on the right way to certify and present these documents in line with current Department standards.

Dual citizenship considerations. Some countries do not allow dual citizenship. Becoming an Australian citizen may affect your existing nationality. We advise on what this means for your situation before you apply.

Applications involving children. Children under 16 can be included in a parent's citizenship application. Children aged 16 to 17 must apply separately. We advise on the right process for each age group and make sure children's documents are prepared correctly.

Citizenship Test Preparation Advice

Applicants aged 18 to 59 must pass the Australian Citizenship Test before their application can be finalised. The test covers Australian values, history, and the responsibilities of citizenship.

You will not receive your test date until after you lodge. But preparing early means you are ready when the invitation arrives, and it avoids delays caused by failed attempts.

We advise clients on what the test covers and flag any issues that could affect their eligibility to sit it.

Citizenship by Descent

Citizenship by descent is for people born outside Australia to an Australian citizen parent. If you qualify, this pathway is faster than conferral.

As of December 2025, 75% of citizenship by descent applications are processed within five months, and 90% are finalised within seven months.

The key requirement is proving that at least one parent was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth. If your parent's citizenship records are incomplete or hard to verify, we help you build the evidence needed to support your claim.

Citizenship Refusals and Reviews

If your citizenship application has been refused, you may have options to challenge that decision.

We review the refusal reason in detail and advise honestly on whether a review or a new application gives you the best path forward. As qualified immigration lawyers, we can take your case to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) if that is the right step.

This is an area where having a qualified lawyer, rather than a migration agent, makes a real difference. Full legal representation at the tribunal level is something only a lawyer can provide.

Why Sydney Applicants Choose CIA Lawyers

There are many immigration services in Sydney. Here is why our clients come to us for citizenship.

not just registered migration agents. That means we can provide full legal advice, prepare legal submissions for complex character or identity issues, and represent you at the Administrative Review Tribunal if your application is refused.

A mismatch between your citizenship application and your old visa records is one of the most common causes of delay. We compare your history across all records before lodgement to prevent this.

If there is a potential issue with your application, whether it is a period of absence, a prior offence, or an identity document gap, we tell you clearly at your first consultation, not after you have paid a non-refundable government fee.

You can speak with our team before committing to anything. We will assess your eligibility, identify any risks, and give you a clear picture of what your application involves.

What Our Citizenship Process Looks Like

Step 1: Eligibility check

We review your visa history, travel record, and character background to confirm you are eligible to apply. This step often catches issues that would otherwise cause delays later.

Step 2: Document preparation

We prepare and organise all required documents, including identity documents, proof of residency, travel history, and police clearances where needed.

Step 3: Application lodgement

We lodge your application through ImmiAccount and make sure every field is completed accurately and consistently with your past visa records.

Step 4: Citizenship test

Once the Department processes your application to a certain stage, you will receive an invitation to sit the citizenship test. We advise you on what to expect.

Step 5: Approval and ceremony

After passing the test, your application is approved and you are invited to attend a citizenship ceremony at your local council. You become an Australian citizen the moment you make the pledge of commitment.

Cases We Handle

Permanent residents who are ready to apply for citizenship by conferral and want the process done correctly

Applicants with a criminal record or traffic history that needs careful disclosure and explanation

People with complex travel histories, including those who spent extended time overseas due to family emergencies, illness, or work

Applicants dealing with identity document gaps or records from countries with unreliable civil registration systems

Citizenship by descent applications where a parent's Australian citizenship needs to be verified

Applications that were refused by the Department and need to be reviewed or challenged

Families wanting to include children in a citizenship application

New Zealand citizens exploring the direct citizenship pathway introduced in recent years

What Sets us Apart

Strong Local Presence in Sydney

Based in Sydney, CIA Lawyers provides immigration legal services across Sydney CBD, Parramatta and Western Sydney. Our team regularly works within Australia’s legal and migration framework, with experience appearing before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT), the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA), the Federal Court and other relevant jurisdictions. Being locally based means we understand how migration matters are handled within New South Wales and at the federal level. We are familiar with court procedures, tribunal expectations and Department of Home Affairs processes, allowing us to prepare cases thoroughly and represent clients with confidence.

Proven Track Record of Success

Strong preparation leads to strong outcomes. Our firm has successfully handled a wide range of visa applications, AAT appeals and judicial review matters. Each case is prepared thoroughly to maximise approval prospects and reduce unnecessary delays.

We Solve Complex Immigration Issues

Visa refusals, cancellations and character concerns require careful legal strategy. We analyse the reasons for refusal, identify the best pathway forward and represent you confidently in appeals and court proceedings when required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Not necessarily. You also need to have lived lawfully in Australia for the full four years before your application date, including the 12 months as a permanent resident. Your absences from Australia during that four-year period must not exceed 12 months in total, or 90 days in the 12 months immediately before you apply. Many people assume they are eligible before they actually are. We do a residency audit at the first consultation to confirm your dates before you pay any fees.

You must disclose all criminal history, including traffic offences, in your citizenship application. Whether it affects the outcome depends on the nature and age of the offence and your overall character record. Many applicants with minor histories are still approved. However, if you have any conviction at all, it is wise to get legal advice before you apply, so you can present the matter clearly and correctly.

Possibly. Any time spent outside Australia counts toward your absence allowance, regardless of the reason. If your travel history is close to the 12-month or 90-day thresholds, we need to check your exact dates carefully before you apply. We also advise on whether any discretionary provisions may apply to your situation.

If you fail, you need to re-sit the test. A second failure means another wait before you can try again. If you fail three times, you are banned from applying for citizenship for two years. We advise clients on how to prepare so they go into the test with confidence, and we flag any circumstances that could affect your eligibility to sit the test in the first place.

A registered migration agent can prepare and lodge your citizenship application and provide migration advice. An immigration lawyer can do all of that, and also give full legal advice, draft legal submissions for complex character or identity concerns, and represent you at the Administrative Review Tribunal if your application is refused. For straightforward applications, either can help. If your case involves any complexity, such as a criminal history, identity issues, or a prior refusal, a lawyer gives you broader legal protection.

Other Services we provide in Sydney

Do not let a missing document, a miscalculated absence, or an undisclosed conviction hold you back from the final step.

We will review your situation and give you a clear, honest assessment of your citizenship eligibility and what your application involves.
